Journey to Paradise : A guide to respectful travel and cultural insights

Hello, fellow travelers! If Bali’s stunning beaches, lush landscapes, and vibrant culture are calling your name, you’re in for a magical journey. Before you embark on this tropical escape, let this blog be your guide to an unforgettable experience on the Island of the Gods. Rest assured, we’re keeping it light-hearted and delightful!

Do’s:

  • Respect Religious Practices: Bali is predominantly Hindu, and religious practices are an integral part of daily life. When visiting temples, always wear a sarong and sash, which are often provided at the entrance. Remove your shoes before entering any sacred space.
  • Cover Up When Visiting Temples: When exploring Bali’s exquisite temples, cover up your shoulders and knees. It’s a sign of respect that’ll score you major brownie points with the locals.
  • Haggle with a Smile: Bargaining is common at markets and stalls. Approach it with a friendly attitude, respect the sales, and enjoy the lively banter- it’s all part of the experience!
  • Learn Basic Bahasa Indonesia: While many Balinese speak English, learning a few basic phrases in Bahasa Indonesia can go a long way. Simple greetings like “Selamat pagi” (Good morning) and “Terima kasih” (Thank you) are appreciated.
  • Use Both Hands: When giving or receiving something, use both hands or your right hand. This gesture shows respect and politeness.
  • Try Local Cuisine: From spicy nasi goreng to refreshing coconut water straight from the husk, Bali’s food scene is a delight. Step out of your comfort zone and savor the flavors of Indonesian cuisine.
  • Dispose of Trash Properly: Help keep Bali beautiful by disposing of your trash properly. Use designated bins and avoid littering, especially on beaches and in natural areas.
  • Respectful Driver: Drive with a license, wearing a helmet and respectful clothing.
  • Ask for Permission Before Taking Photos: Always ask for permission before taking photos of people, especially during religious ceremonies. Some rituals are considered sacred, and photographing them without consent can be seen as disrespectful.

Don’ts:

  • Disrespect Sacred Sites & Balinese Offerings: Avoid climbing on sacred statues or entering restricted areas in temples and step on Balinese offerings (‘Canang Sari’ – A daily offerings placed at the entrances of homes, shops, temples, near sacred trees, along the streets, sidewalks, and even on the beaches). Always follow posted signs and listen to local guides to ensure you’re being respectful.
  • Don’t Touch People’s Heads: In Balinese culture, the head is considered the most sacred part of the body. Avoid touching anyone’s head, including children, as it is seen as disrespectful.
  • Don’t Point with Your Feet: Feet are considered the lowest and dirtiest part of the body. Avoid pointing your feet at people or religious objects, and never step over someone sitting on the ground.
  • Don’t Enter Temples During Menstruation: Women who are menstruating are traditionally not allowed to enter temples. This is based on cultural beliefs about purity and respect for sacred spaces.
  • Drive Without Caution: Traffic in Bali can be chaotic, and roads can be narrow and winding. If you plan to rent a scooter or drive, ensure you have a license, wear a helmet and drive cautiously to ensure your safety and that of others.
  • Engage in Excessive Drinking: Bali has a vibrant nightlife scene, but public intoxication or while driving is not acceptable. Enjoy your cocktails responsibly and be mindful of your behavior, particularly in local communities.
  • Neglect Cultural Sensitivities: Balinese culture values politeness and modesty. Avoid public displays of affection, especially in traditional villages, and be mindful of local customs regarding personal space and interactions.

Remember, Bali is an amazing place full of beauty and friendly vibes. By respecting the local customs, keeping the environment clean, and soaking up the culture, you’ll not only have an awesome trip but also help keep Bali special for everyone. So, dive into Bali, enjoy the culture, and really feel the island’s magic. Have an awesome trip!
